Can ChatGPT Do SEO?

ChatGPT can help with SEO, but it can't do SEO on its own. It can draft titles, outline pages, explain technical fixes and list the questions customers ask. On its own, it can't see Google's ranking data, your Search Console numbers or real search volume, so any numbers it gives you need checking in a real tool. RankiN AIs in Arvada, CO wrote this to show where ChatGPT helps a local business and where it doesn't.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT is a writing and thinking assistant for SEO. It's not an SEO tool.
- Ahrefs, which sells SEO tools, says keyword numbers ChatGPT gives without live data are guesses.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.
- Google doesn't ban AI-written content. Google says using automation to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies.
- To show up in ChatGPT search, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site. OpenAI says placement isn't guaranteed.
- Getting AI to recommend you depends on what it reads about you. That means your site, your Google Business Profile and the listings each tool cites.

What can ChatGPT do for SEO?
ChatGPT can do the writing and explaining parts of SEO. It's fast at first drafts and lists. It needs your facts and your judgment to get them right.
| SEO task | Can ChatGPT help? | Check it with |
|---|---|---|
| List questions customers ask about a service | Yes | Google's "People Also Ask" box and your own customer calls |
| Outline a service page | Yes | What you actually offer |
| Draft title tags and meta descriptions | Yes | Read each one for accuracy |
| Explain robots.txt, redirects or schema | Yes | Google Search Central |
| Write a first draft from your notes | Yes | Your own facts, prices and experience |
| Give search volume or keyword difficulty | Not reliably | A keyword tool or Google Search Console |
| Tell you where you rank on Google | No | Google Search Console |
| Show your Business Profile calls and clicks | No | Google Business Profile performance |
The pattern is simple. ChatGPT helps with words. Real data comes from Google's tools or a paid SEO tool.
What can't ChatGPT do for SEO?
ChatGPT can't see the data SEO runs on. Ahrefs says ChatGPT isn't pulling from a live search index or a keyword database. Ahrefs says that when ChatGPT gives a keyword "1,200 monthly searches" or a difficulty score of "43," those numbers are guesses. Ahrefs sells SEO data tools. Google makes a related point. Google says third-party SEO tools don't have access to Google's internal ranking data.
ChatGPT can search the web, but OpenAI warns about the results. OpenAI says search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. OpenAI tells users to open a cited source and check that it supports the answer.
ChatGPT also can't do the offline parts of local SEO:
- Earn real reviews from real customers
- Fix a wrong phone number on Yelp or the BBB
- Renew a city license
- Make sure the person answering your phone books the job
Those are the parts that build trust. AI tools read them too.
Will Google penalize content written with ChatGPT?
No, not because ChatGPT wrote it. Google says its ranking systems aim to reward original, high-quality content, however it's produced. Google looks for what it calls E-E-A-T, which stands for expertise, experience, authoritativeness and trustworthiness.
The line Google draws is about purpose. Google says using automation, including AI, to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings violates its spam policies. Google's spam policies name scaled content abuse. One example Google gives is using generative AI tools to generate many pages without adding value for users.
That rules out a common shortcut. Fifty city pages with the same text and a different town name add little for a reader, which is the pattern Google describes. The RankiN AIs local SEO page says the goal isn't hundreds of nearly identical city pages. The goal is useful local content with real information about the business.
How should a local business use ChatGPT for SEO?
Use ChatGPT as a drafting assistant and give it your real facts first. Here's a safe way to work.
- Give it your facts. Paste your business name, address, phone, hours, services and service towns. Tell it not to add anything else.
- Ask for questions, not answers. Try: "List 15 questions a homeowner in Arvada, CO asks before hiring a roofer."
- Check the questions against Google. Search a few and look at the "People Also Ask" box.
- Draft one page per service. Try: "Write an outline for a page about roof repair in Arvada, CO. Use only the facts I gave you."
- Add what only you know. Add real prices, real photos, your licenses and how long you've done the work.
- Fact-check every line. Delete any number, claim or quote you can't back up.
- Get keyword data elsewhere. Use Google Search Console for the searches that already find you.
Tell ChatGPT to use only the facts you gave it. Then check every line anyway, because OpenAI says its answers can be incomplete or incorrect.
How do you get AI to recommend your business?
You get AI to recommend your business by making it easy for AI tools to find, understand and verify. That goes for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Mode and DeepSeek. No one can buy a spot. OpenAI says ChatGPT search placement isn't guaranteed. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
Three facts shape how AI recommends local businesses:
- The list is short. BrightLocal's study of 200,000 prompts found AI names 2 to 4 local businesses per answer on average.
- The answers change. 8ight asked ChatGPT the same question twice. A median of only 29% of the businesses named were named both times.
- Each tool reads different sources. 8ight found ChatGPT cited the BBB in 38.7% of local answers. Claude cited Yelp in 92.7%. BrightLocal found Google Business Profiles were the top source for Google AI Mode and AI Overviews.
RankiN AIs has written about this in depth. How AI Recommends Local Businesses covers the three things AI checks first.
How do you increase visibility on ChatGPT?
You increase visibility on ChatGPT by letting its search crawler in and making sure the sites it cites list you correctly. Start with these steps.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says that to make a website eligible for ChatGPT search, you allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it. OpenAI also says your host or CDN has to allow traffic from its published search bot IP addresses.
- Know what GPTBot does. OpenAI says GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train its models. OAI-SearchBot is the one for search. OpenAI says each setting is independent.
- Check Bing. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends rewritten queries to other search providers. Its help page links to Microsoft's privacy statement for those providers. Keep your Bing Places listing accurate.
- Name your city. OpenAI says ChatGPT can turn "What are some good restaurants near me?" into the search "top restaurants San Francisco," based on the user's approximate location.
- Fix the sources ChatGPT cites. 8ight found ChatGPT cited the BBB in 38.7% of local answers and a government or licensing site in 25.1%.
- Keep Yelp accurate. Search Engine Land reported in July 2026 that Yelp is licensing its reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI for ChatGPT.
Then test it. Ask ChatGPT about your service in your city several times and log what it says. The post Does AI Search Know Your Arvada Business? gives six prompts and a log sheet. The RankiN AIs guide to AI search visibility covers the full strategy.
What does this look like for an Arvada business?
An Arvada business can use ChatGPT to draft and test, and keep the trust work local. Here's what that looks like.
Prompts that name Arvada. Ask ChatGPT for questions your Arvada customers ask, like "What do homeowners in Arvada, CO ask before hiring a plumber?" Then answer those questions on your own pages, with your own facts.
One city name everywhere. Hometown Locator lists Arvada as the USPS preferred city for ZIP code 80003, with Westminster as an acceptable alternative. Pick one city name and use it on every page and listing. RankiN AIs uses "6316 W 86th Ave, Arvada, CO 80003" everywhere.
A current city license. The City of Arvada requires a license for contractors who build, remodel, repair or equip buildings. The license is good for one year, and you re-apply every year. ChatGPT cited a government or licensing site in 25.1% of local answers in 8ight's study. ChatGPT can't renew your license. You can.
Where does AceTrace fit?
AceTrace is RankiN AIs' AI Citation Engineering framework. It follows a business through seven stages: Discovered, Understood, Retrieved, Verified, Trusted, Cited and Recommended. TRACE stands for Trust, Retrieval, Authority, Citations and Evidence. ChatGPT can help you write pages. AceTrace looks at whether AI tools can find, trust and cite the business behind them.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT replace an SEO agency?
No. ChatGPT can draft content and explain SEO, but it can't see your rankings, your Search Console data or your Business Profile numbers. It also can't fix your listings or earn reviews. An SEO provider or your own team still does that work.
Can ChatGPT do keyword research?
ChatGPT can brainstorm keyword ideas and customer questions. Ahrefs says the search volumes and difficulty scores it gives without live data are guesses. Check volume in a keyword tool or in Google Search Console.
Is AI-written content bad for SEO?
Not by itself. Google says it rewards high-quality content however it's produced. Google says using AI to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating rankings violates its spam policies.
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?
Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, name your city, and keep your listings accurate on the sites ChatGPT cites, like the BBB. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search isn't guaranteed. The post How AI Recommends Local Businesses has the full list.
