Is Local SEO Worth It?

Local SEO is worth it when people search for what you sell in your area and the customers it brings in earn more than it costs. You can check that before you sign anything. Divide the monthly fee by the profit from one new customer, and you get the number of new customers you need each month to break even. RankiN AIs in Arvada, CO wrote this so you can run that math on your own numbers.

Key takeaways

  • Local SEO pays when the profit from the new customers it brings is bigger than the fee.
  • Say you clear $500 profit per new customer (a made-up example). At Ahrefs' $1,557 average monthly price for local providers, you need about 3 new customers a month to break even.
  • Google says some SEO changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months.
  • Your Google Business Profile shows calls, direction requests, website clicks, messages and bookings. Those are the numbers to judge it by.
  • SEO isn't dead. Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Local SEO also feeds AI search. BrightLocal found Google Business Profiles made up 28.6% of all local AI citations.
Bar chart. New customers a month needed to cover a $1,557 local SEO fee, by profit per new customer: $100 profit needs 15.6 customers, $250 needs 6.2, $500 needs 3.1, $1,000 needs 1.6, $2,500 needs 0.6. The profit figures are made-up examples, not data. The fee is Ahrefs' average for providers serving local markets.

When is local SEO worth it?

Local SEO is worth it when your customers are nearby and they search before they buy. Google says its local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity. Google explains the third factor under the name prominence, meaning how well-known a business is.

That gives you two factors you can work on and one you can't. You can't change your distance from the person searching. You can change relevance with complete, detailed business info, Google says. You can build prominence too. Google says prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.

Local SEO tends to fit when these are true:

  • People search for your service with a city name or "near me."
  • You have a shop, an office or a service area customers can reach.
  • One new customer is worth a lot to you, or customers come back.
  • You can take on more work if more calls come in.

When is local SEO not worth it?

Local SEO isn't worth it when local customers aren't your market or the math doesn't add up. Skip it, or wait, in these cases:

  • You sell online to the whole country. Your main job is general SEO, which aims at searches from anywhere.
  • You're fully booked. More calls won't help if you can't take the jobs.
  • The fee buys almost no work. At Ahrefs' $93.89 average hourly rate for local providers, $300 a month buys about 3 hours.
  • The provider promises a ranking. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
  • Your profit per customer is small and nobody comes back. You'd need too many new customers each month to cover the fee.

How do you work out if local SEO is worth it for you?

Work out your break-even number. It takes four steps.

  1. Find your profit from one new customer. Use profit, not the sale price.
  2. Get the monthly fee in writing.
  3. Divide the fee by the profit. That's how many new customers a month you need to break even.
  4. If customers come back, count what one customer is worth to you over a year.

The table runs that math at two prices. $500 is the bottom of the most common SEO retainer band in both Ahrefs' and SE Ranking's surveys. $1,557 is Ahrefs' average for providers who serve local markets. The profit figures are made-up examples, not data from any business. Use your own.

Profit per new customer (made-up example) Customers a month to cover $500 Customers a month to cover $1,557
$100 5 15.6
$250 2 6.2
$500 1 3.1
$1,000 0.5 1.6
$2,500 0.2 0.6

Here are two made-up examples. Say a roofer clears $2,500 on a job. That roofer covers a $1,557 fee with less than one new job a month. Say a coffee shop clears $5 a visit. That shop would need far more new regulars. The fee sets the bar. Your profit decides if you clear it.

How long does local SEO take to pay off?

Local SEO results take time. Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months. Google suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped.

Set a baseline before any work starts. Write down this month's calls, direction requests, website clicks and leads.

Pick a review date too. Judge the work against your baseline on that date, not against one good or bad week.

What should you measure to know if local SEO is working?

Measure the actions customers take, not only rankings. Google Business Profile shows these numbers for your profile:

  • Calls, counted when someone taps the call button
  • Direction requests
  • Website clicks
  • Messages
  • Bookings, if you use a booking provider
  • The search terms people used to find you

Google says those numbers include views and actions from both organic results and Google Ads. Keep that in mind if you also run ads.

Google Search Console covers your website. Google says it's a free service that helps you monitor and fix how your site shows up in Google Search.

RankiN AIs tracks calls, leads, conversions, search activity and visibility changes.

The post on whether your Arvada Google Business Profile is working shows how to read those Business Profile numbers.

Is it worth it to pay for SEO, or should you do it yourself?

Paying for SEO is worth it when your time costs more than the fee or the job needs skills you don't have. Google says hiring an SEO can improve your site's visibility and save you time. Google also warns that an irresponsible SEO can damage your site and reputation.

Do it yourself Pay a provider

Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?

SEO is evolving, not dead. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google also says there are no additional requirements to appear in them.

What changed is where people see the answer. AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics before they answer, Google says. Google calls that query fan-out. Google also says AI Overviews show only when its systems decide they add something to classic Search, so they often don't show.

Local SEO feeds the AI answers. BrightLocal found Google Business Profiles made up 28.6% of all local AI citations, and they were the top source for AI Mode and AI Overviews. BrightLocal's study of 200,000 prompts found AI names 2 to 4 local businesses per answer on average. The answers also change from run to run. 8ight asked ChatGPT the same question twice. A median of only 29% of the businesses named were named both times.

That makes the basics more important. A short list of 2 to 4 names leaves little room for a business with a half-finished profile. Get the basics right for every AI tool your customers use, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Mode and DeepSeek. The post How AI Recommends Local Businesses covers what AI tools check.

Is local SEO worth it for an Arvada business?

Local SEO is worth checking for any Arvada business with local customers, because Arvada sits inside a big metro. Arvada had 124,402 people at the 2020 census, according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia also says it's part of the Denver metropolitan area.

Distance works for you in Google. Google uses distance from the searcher as a local ranking factor. Someone searching in Arvada is close to an Arvada business.

ChatGPT casts a wider net. BrightLocal found 90% of ChatGPT's local picks were within 287 km of the searcher. For Google's AI, that radius was 39 to 64 km. Name Arvada and the towns you serve on your site, so ChatGPT can match you to the city in the search.

Some Arvada trust signals are cheap. The City of Arvada requires a license for contractors who build, remodel, repair or equip buildings. The license is good for one year, and you re-apply every year. The city lists fees from $0 to $200, depending on the class. 8ight found ChatGPT cited a government or licensing site in 25.1% of local answers. A current license costs far less than a month of SEO.

FAQ

Is it worth it to pay for SEO instead of ads?

Does local SEO help my business show up in ChatGPT?

Local SEO helps, but no one can promise a ChatGPT mention. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search isn't guaranteed. 8ight found ChatGPT cited the Better Business Bureau in 38.7% of local answers and a government or licensing site in 25.1%. Accurate listings on those sites are part of local SEO.
