AceTrace is the AI Citation Engineering framework that RankiN AIs uses to make a business easier for search engines and AI tools to find, check and name. It follows a business through seven stages, from Discovered to Recommended. This guide explains each stage in plain words for a business owner in Arvada or anywhere in the Denver metro.
Key takeaways
- AceTrace has seven stages. They are Discovered, Understood, Retrieved, Verified, Trusted, Cited and Recommended.
- TRACE is the implementation model behind AceTrace. The letters stand for Trust, Retrieval, Authority, Citations and Evidence.
- The stages build on SEO. Google says its SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no special AI markup is needed.
- AI answers name few businesses. BrightLocal's study of 200,000 local prompts averaged 2.5 to 4.1 businesses per answer, depending on the tool.
- AceTrace guarantees no citation or recommendation. Each AI system controls its own retrieval and answers.

What is AceTrace in one paragraph?
AceTrace is RankiN AIs' framework for organizing the facts and evidence around a business. RankiN AIs says the name stands for AI Citation Engineering. Jonathan Otto developed it for RankiN AIs. The framework asks one question at every stage. Does the evidence on the web show clearly what this business is, what it does, where it works and why it fits the customer's question?
The What Is AceTrace service page defines the framework in full. This article covers the same seven stages in shorter, plain words for an owner.
What are the seven AceTrace stages?
The live AceTrace page calls the stages "a simple progression." Here they are in order, with the page's own one-line goal for each:
- Discovered. Make the business discoverable.
- Understood. Make the business and its services clear.
- Retrieved. Make important information accessible and relevant.
- Verified. Create consistent supporting information.
- Trusted. Build credible signals and useful evidence.
- Cited. Strengthen relevant references across the web.
- Recommended. Help search systems connect the business with relevant customer needs.
In more detail, the live page says Discovered covers places like Google Search, Google Maps, business profiles and your website. Understood connects the business to its services, location, industry, expertise and audience. Verified means your name, address, phone, website, category, services and hours line up across sources. Trusted looks at signals such as reviews, consistent facts, original content and demonstrated experience. Cited covers relevant references in listings, directories, local websites and publications.
What is TRACE?
The RankiN AIs homepage calls TRACE "the implementation model behind AceTrace." TRACE has five parts:
- Trust
- Retrieval
- Authority
- Citations
- Evidence
Why does AceTrace use stages at all?
A business can be strong at one stage and missing at another. A plumber can have hundreds of reviews and still show two different phone numbers on two sites. The stages give you a way to look for the gap instead of guessing.
The data shows why the last step is narrow:
- BrightLocal averaged 4.1 businesses per answer for ChatGPT, 3.5 for Google AI Mode and 2.5 for Google AI Overviews in its study of 200,000 local prompts.
- The list changes between runs. BrightLocal found two runs of the same prompt shared 21% to 33% of their businesses.
- 8ight found a median 29% of businesses were the same when ChatGPT got one local question twice.
- Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics before they answer. Google calls this query fan-out.
So a business needs evidence that holds up across many related questions. One good page is rarely enough.
What does a Verified gap look like next to a Cited gap?
The two gaps look alike from outside. In both, AI skips you. The fixes differ.
A Verified gap means your facts disagree with each other. Your website says one suite number and your profile says another. The fix is to correct the records you control until they match.
A Cited gap means your facts may be right, but the places AI reads do not mention you. The fix is to earn a real listing or mention on those sources.
The sources differ by tool. 8ight found ChatGPT cited the Better Business Bureau in 38.7% of local answers and a government or licensing site in 25.1%. BrightLocal found Google Business Profile made up about 28.6% of all citations across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Check the sources each tool uses before you choose where to work.
How is AceTrace different from traditional SEO?
AceTrace builds on SEO. It does not replace it. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no extra requirements or special optimizations are needed to appear in them.
The difference is the question you ask. The live page puts it this way. Traditional SEO asks, "How do we help this page rank?" AceTrace asks, "How do we make this business easier for search systems to understand, retrieve, verify, cite, and connect with the right questions?" The service page has the full side-by-side comparison.
Google also sets a basic gate. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
AceTrace needs no special AI file or markup either. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data to appear in its AI features.
What do the stages look like for an Arvada business?
The stages use the same evidence everywhere. Arvada adds a few local details worth checking.
Understood starts with the city name. RankiN AIs is in ZIP code 80003. Hometown Locator lists Arvada as the USPS preferred city for 80003 and Westminster as an acceptable one. The same ZIP has parts in Adams County and Jefferson County. Pick one city name for your address and use it on every listing.
Recommended depends on how customers ask. The live AceTrace page uses the example "Who provides local SEO services in Denver?" An Arvada customer may name Arvada, Olde Town Arvada or Denver. Test your Recommended stage with each place name your customers use.
Discovered can reach past town. BrightLocal found 90% of ChatGPT's picks came from within 287 km of the searcher, against 38 to 64 km for Google's AI tools. A Denver metro business can show up in answers well outside its own city, or miss answers inside it.
Which AI tools does AceTrace look at?
RankiN AIs targets ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and DeepSeek, along with Google Search, Google Maps, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Each tool reads different sources, so check each one on its own. The studies cited here tested ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google's AI tools. None of them tested DeepSeek.

What is TRACE?

The stages describe a progression from Discovered to Recommended. In practice, work at several stages can run at once.
