What you should pay for local SEO depends on how much work your business needs. The number of locations and towns you want to show up in, the state of your Google Business Profile, listings and website, and whether you want AI search work all move the price. RankiN AIs doesn't publish set prices, and this guide doesn't quote any. It shows what drives the cost, how local SEO is billed, what to ask before you sign and which quotes to walk away from. It comes from RankiN AIs, a local SEO and AI search agency in Arvada, CO.
Key takeaways
- The amount of work drives the price: locations, towns served, the state of your listings and site, and any AI search work.
- Local SEO is billed three ways: a monthly fee, an hourly rate or a one-time project fee. BrightLocal found 54% of local marketing agencies bill a monthly fee based on deliverables.
- Ask for the tasks, the hours and the reporting in writing before you sign.
- AI search optimization is sometimes folded into SEO and sometimes sold as an extra. Google says there are no special optimizations needed to appear in its AI features.
- Some of local SEO is free. A Google Business Profile and Google Search Console cost nothing.
- Walk away from any guaranteed ranking. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
What drives the cost of local SEO?
The cost of local SEO comes down to how much work your business needs and who does it. These are the main things that move a quote:
- How many locations you have. Each location has its own Google Business Profile, listings and reviews to keep up.
- How many towns you want to show up in. Each extra town can mean more service pages and more listings to check.
- Where you start. A profile and listings that don't match take cleanup work first. A site with technical problems needs fixing before new pages help.
- One-time work or ongoing work. Setup jobs happen once. Reviews, posts, listings and reporting go on every month.
- Who does the work. Ahrefs' SEO pricing survey found agencies and consultancies charge more on average than freelancers. It also found providers with more years in business charge more.
- Agency size. SE Ranking's survey with Duda found larger agencies were more likely to charge higher monthly fees.
- Local or national reach. Ahrefs found providers who serve local markets charge less on average than providers who serve a worldwide market.
- AI search work. Checking and improving what ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and DeepSeek say about you can be part of the plan or an extra.
Region matters too. SE Ranking found agencies in the US and Canada were more likely than agencies in Europe to charge higher monthly and hourly fees.
How is local SEO usually billed?
Local SEO is usually billed one of three ways. Each one fits a different kind of job.
| How it's billed | What it fits | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee (retainer) | Ongoing work like profile updates, reviews, listings, content and reporting | Which tasks get done each month, and how many hours does that take? |
| Hourly rate | Short jobs, like looking into a sudden ranking drop | How many hours do you expect, and what's the cap? |
| One-time project | Setup work, like a profile cleanup, listing fixes, a technical audit or new service pages | What exactly is delivered, and when is it done? |
Monthly fees are the most common way to pay. BrightLocal's 2024 survey of local marketing agencies found 54% bill a monthly fee based on deliverables. BrightLocal's guide to local SEO pricing says hourly rates fit a simple but important request, like looking into a ranking drop.
One-time work usually covers setup jobs. Examples are a Google Business Profile cleanup, fixing listings that don't match, a technical audit or new service pages. The RankiN AIs local SEO service page lists each of these.
Google gives one rule for audits. If a provider offers an SEO audit, give them read access to Google Search Console, not write access. Google says an audit should give realistic estimates of improvement and an estimate of the work involved.
What should you ask before you pay for local SEO?
Ask questions that turn a price into work you can see. Get the answers in writing.
- Which tasks get done each month, and which happen only once?
- How many hours does the fee cover?
- Is the work done by a person or by a tool?
- Does it include Google Business Profile updates, reviews and listings?
- How many locations, towns or service areas does it cover?
- Does it include content, links or AI search work, or only upkeep?
- What report do you get, and how often?
- What's the minimum term, and how do you leave?
A low price isn't a red flag by itself. A low price with vague deliverables is. Ask what gets done each month, by whom, and how you'll see it.
Does AI search optimization cost extra?
Sometimes. AI search optimization is also called generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO). Some agencies fold it into their SEO price, and some sell it as an extra. SE Ranking found 43% of agencies planned to add AI Overviews optimization to their existing offerings, and 18% planned to sell it as an extra service.
Check what an extra fee buys. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google also says there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in them. A GEO add-on should name work your local SEO plan doesn't already cover. One example is checking what ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and DeepSeek say about you across repeated runs. The RankiN AIs guide to AI search visibility explains that work, and the post on whether AI search knows your Arvada business shows how to test it.
Is local SEO free?
Part of local SEO is free. Google says creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free. Google Search Console is a free Google service that shows how your site performs in Google Search.
The free work is real work. You can do these yourself:
- Claim and fill out your Google Business Profile.
- Make your name, address and phone number match everywhere. The post on keeping your business info the same everywhere walks through it.
- Ask every real customer for a review.
- Check that your Google Business Profile is bringing in calls. The post on whether your Arvada Google Business Profile is working covers the numbers to check.
Your time is the cost. Paying someone makes sense when that time is worth more spent on your own work.
Do you have to pay for search engine optimization?
No, you don't have to pay for search engine optimization. Google says it never accepts money to include or rank sites in its search results, and it costs nothing to appear in its organic results. Google also says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Buying Google Ads doesn't change that. Google says advertising with Google won't have any effect on a site's presence in its search results.
What you pay for is someone's time and skill. Google says a great time to hire one is when you're planning a site redesign or launching a new site.
What red flags should you watch for when you pay for local SEO?
Watch for promises nobody can keep. Google's page on hiring an SEO lists most of these.
- A guaranteed ranking. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
- A "special relationship" with Google or a "priority submit." Google says to beware of both.
- Secret methods. Google says to be careful if a company won't clearly explain what it plans to do.
- Cold emails about your rankings. Google says to be wary of SEO firms that email you out of the blue.
- Link schemes or "submit to thousands of search engines." Google calls these typically useless.
- Write access during an audit. Google says to grant read access to Search Console at that stage.
- Tools "approved by Google." Google says it doesn't evaluate or endorse third-party SEO tools.
- AI search advice that ignores Google. Google tells site owners to check whether GEO or AEO advice matches its own guidance on AI features.
- Paid spots in ChatGPT. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search isn't guaranteed.
- Fake or bought reviews. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews bans them. It took effect on October 21, 2024.
What affects the cost of local SEO for an Arvada business?
Scope affects the cost most. No pricing survey cited here breaks out prices for Arvada or the Denver metro, so ask each provider to price the towns you actually serve.
Arvada sits inside a big market. Arvada had 124,402 people at the 2020 census, according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia also says it's part of the Denver metropolitan area and spans Jefferson and Adams counties. A business that wants to show up in Westminster, Wheat Ridge and Denver as well as Arvada has more pages and listings to keep up. That scope is what moves the quote.
Name the city wherever you can. OpenAI gives an example. ChatGPT can turn "What are some good restaurants near me?" into the search "top restaurants San Francisco," based on the user's approximate location. An Arvada business that names Arvada on its site and listings matches that kind of search.
Some local trust signals come from the city. The City of Arvada requires a license for contractors who build, remodel, repair or equip buildings. The city says the license is good for one year and you re-apply every year. 8ight found ChatGPT cited a government or licensing site in 25.1% of local answers. Most of those were licensing boards, license look-ups or contractor lists. A current Arvada license keeps your record right on that kind of page.

FAQ
Is a cheap local SEO plan worth it?
It can be, if you know what it buys. Ask exactly which tasks fit in the budget, how many hours they take and whether a person or a tool does them. A low price with vague deliverables is the thing to avoid.
Does AI search optimization cost more than SEO?
It depends on the provider. Some agencies include AI search work in their SEO price, and some charge for it separately. Google says there are no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so ask what the extra work covers.
Should I sign a long local SEO contract?
Ask for the minimum term and the exit terms in writing before you sign. The RankiN AIs 14-day free trial has no upfront payment and no automatic billing.
How long until local SEO pays off?
Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months. Google suggests waiting a few weeks to judge whether a change helped. Write down your calls, direction requests and website clicks before work starts, so you have something to compare against.
Can I pay Google or ChatGPT to rank my business higher?
No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Google also says advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in its search results. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search isn't guaranteed.
